Chronic venous insufficiency
Venous insufficiency means a defect of the blood circulatory system to the heart which causes a sensation of heaviness in the legs. Most often, this non-serious phenomenon is aggravated by events such as heat, prolonged periods of standing up and is more frequent in women. In some cases, there is a severe alteration of the veins which are no longer able to perform their mission effectively, which means the blood stagnates in the legs and causes swelling which can be permanent and sometimes significant.
Occasional venous insufficiencies or those without major or permanent swelling can be considerably relieved by programs available for individuals. Chronic venous insufficiencies particularly with regular swelling of the ankles and legs must be able to benefit from appropriate medical treatment.
It is within this framework that your physical therapist may use a specific program (reserved for professionals) for chronic venous insufficiencies, which consists of a sequential stimulation of the muscles of the leg and then the thigh.
